Overview Of The Technical Composition And Application Of Soft Capsule Equipment

Oct 11, 2025

Soft capsules, as a common dosage form for pharmaceuticals and functional foods, are widely used in the pharmaceutical, health product, and cosmetic fields due to their good bioavailability, taste masking properties, and stability. Soft capsule equipment, as the core equipment for integrating shell forming, content filling, and sealing, directly affects product quality, production efficiency, and process controllability. A deep understanding of its composition and principles helps achieve efficient and precise dosage form preparation in production and R&D stages.

The main body of soft capsule equipment consists of a pelleting system, a feeding system, a control system, and auxiliary devices. The pelleting system is the core module, typically including a pair of counter-rotating mold rollers with matching capsule shell cavities engraved on their surfaces. Gelatin solution and plasticizers such as glycerin are supplied to the feeding system after being treated with heat preservation and constant temperature according to the formula, and are evenly coated on the surface of the mold rollers to form a continuous film. Meanwhile, another feeding system quantitatively injects liquid, suspension, or paste-like contents between two film sheets. A mold roller then presses the film into shape, and a shearing and rounding mechanism completes the cutting and initial shaping of individual capsules.

In the sealing stage, the equipment utilizes the synergistic effect of temperature and pressure to melt and bond the edges of the film, forming a sealed capsule structure. Some high-precision models are equipped with an online detection unit that can monitor capsule weight, wall thickness, and sealing quality in real time, working in conjunction with an automatic rejection device to ensure a high product yield. The feeding system must have precise metering and conveying capabilities, especially for materials with large viscosity variations; constant pressure or screw pump methods should be used to avoid fluctuations in filling volume affecting dosage uniformity.

The control system often uses a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a touchscreen human-machine interface to achieve centralized management and traceability of speed matching, temperature regulation, material flow rate, and production batch data. Modern soft capsule equipment can also integrate temperature and humidity monitoring, energy consumption analysis, and remote diagnostic functions, facilitating compliant production under GMP and other quality management systems.

From an application perspective, soft capsule equipment needs to balance versatility and process adaptability. The pharmaceutical industry emphasizes aseptic environments and high-precision dosage control; therefore, equipment should meet cleanroom design requirements and possess cleaning-in-place (CIP) and sterilization-in-place (SIP) functions. Health supplement and cosmetic production focuses more on the flexibility of switching between multiple product lines and production capacity elasticity. Equipment materials are mostly stainless steel and food-grade polymers to ensure corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning, while reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

Overall, soft capsule equipment achieves integrated continuous production from raw materials to finished products through the organic linkage of capsule making, filling, sealing, and testing. Its technological advancements are reflected in intelligent control, precise metering, and diversified process adaptability, providing reliable support for the large-scale manufacturing of high-quality soft capsules and playing a key role in promoting dosage form innovation and industrial upgrading.
